But Really, Why All the Sleep Fuss?

Sleep is not just a period of rest; it is a vital component of a child's overall well-being and development.

1. Sleep is crucial for physical growth and development. During sleep, the body releases growth hormones that support the development of bones, muscles, and tissues. During deep uninterrupted sleep, these hormones are most active, promoting optimal growth in children.

2. Germ alert! Quality sleep also contributes to a strong immune system, helping children fight off illnesses and infections. And when we do get sick, we need more sleep to help our bodies recover, fight off the bad bacteria, and increase blood flow. How cool are our bodies?

3. Besides physical growth, sleep plays a crucial role in cognitive development. When children sleep, their brains consolidate and organize the information they have learned during the day. This process strengthens memory and enhances learning. You know the phrase “mom brain”? Sometimes we just need consistent solid sleep back in our lives. Little ones are much more sensitive to sleep needs to be able to connect the dots in their brains and bodies.

4. Research has shown that children who get adequate sleep perform better academically, have improved attention and concentration, and exhibit better problem-solving skills. On the other hand, insufficient sleep can lead to difficulties with memory, learning, and cognitive functioning.

When a child is having a hard time socially or academically, sleep, nutrition, and environment are the first three things we can look at, and take actionable steps for lasting improvements.

I think of sleep as the foundational gatekeeper of health. When we sleep well regularly, we’ve given ourselves a unique opportunity to thrive in various aspects of our lives. When sleep basics are in place, you kind of wake up like a superhero, right? Ready to go, rather than in reaction mode all day. And if you’re a tired parent reading this, you would likely agree those superhero days are incredible, when they actually happen.

Is there anything better than waking up feeling like you can solve the problems of the world (or at least your world)?

I appreciate you. Dream Big, sleep well.
